The old graveyard in "Stoke-Barehills" mentioned in Jude the Obscure
Says it all for Basingstoke today - that it's almost impossible to find the chapel. The Samaritans and the modern shopping centre are both far better sign-posted..... the former from necessity, I suspect.

"The most familiar object in Stoke-Barehills nowadays is its cemetery,
standing among some picturesque mediaeval ruins beside the railway;
the modern chapels, modern tombs, and modern shrubs having a look
of intrusiveness amid the crumbling and ivy-covered decay of the
ancient walls."
