Black Heath was formerly extremely extensive, as per the description of Egdon Heath in Return of the Native. Today it is very much more fragmented.
View towards a barrow (not one of the group named Rainbarrows) on Black Heath. This picture, taken in August, shows the purple of the heather as well as the yellow of the heath flowers.
View towards Rainbarrows. Rainbarrows is not one, but a cluster of three barrows. In these days of forestry, they do not dominate the landscape in the way that Rainbarrow does in Return of the Native.
